Feeling Blue...


What is it about the color blue that fascinates me? I've had a strange obsession with the color for as far back as I can remember. I think I experience it almost like an additional sense. It elicits a response in me that I can't quite put my finger on. I was even excited to pick out the pictures for this blog post!


I used to collect blue glass pieces that I displayed on shelves in my bedroom, but a decade passed making their shapes feel outdated and stagnant. I got rid of them. Now I just admire the color when I see it. I don't wear it very much- it's not blue clothing that draws in as much as objects, art and nature.



I am fond of all shades of blue: periwinkle, blue-grey, baby blue, but the color that has the biggest pull for me is cobalt blue. There's something about cobalt that I find mesmerizing. Whether you want to call it cobalt or royal blue, electric blue, midnight blue- whatever name you like, that's the color that draws me in.


When I look at a good painting with that bright blue hue, it sucks me right in. I am no longer just seeing the painting, I am feeling it. I am becoming a part of the painting. When I hold up a piece of blue glass to the light and peek through the bottom, I feel like I am gazing into a blue swirling universe of ocean and sky. It's ethereal.


In meditation there is a state called "the blue pearl". It is believed after many years of meditation, one can get to a state where a blue dot of light will appear to them. Having never experienced this myself, I can only pass on what others have seen. It has been described as a bright, shining, seed of light, almost like a laser point, that glows intensely. It is supposed to signify enlightenment.


In her book Eat, Pray, Love Elizabeth Gilbert writes about the blue pearl. Here is excerpt:

"I found an article in The New York Times recently about a team of neurologists who had wired up a volunteer Tibetan monk for experiment brain-scanning. They wanted to see what happens to a transcendent mind, scientifically speaking, during moments of enlightenment. In the mind of a normal thinking person, electrical storm of thoughts and impulses whirls constantly, registering on a brain scan as yellow and red flashes. The more angry or impassioned the subject becomes, the hotter and deeper those red flashes burn."




"But mystics across time and cultures have all described a stilling of the brain during mediation, and this is called the "the blue pearl", and it is the goal of every seeker to quiet his mind so completely that no red or yellow flashes could be seen. In fact, all the neurological energy of this gentleman pooled and cooled at last into the center of his brain - you could see it happening right there on the monitor - into a small, cool blue pearl of light, just like the Yogis have always described." 



I find that fascinating!  I would love to be able to get my meditation practice to that state. It sounds incredibly peaceful to find that light inside oneself. If I ever see anything other-wordly during my meditation, you will be the first to know about it. Until then- until I see it with my own eyes (or rather, my third eye), I guess I'll just have to keep feeling blue.

A True Work of Art...

Back in November, I posted the below step-by-step pictorial of NYC artist, Rochelle Fox. Her work is so good, I have to show you again. A Step-by-Step Pictorial of a true work of Art

Below is the Step-by-Step process taken by artist, Rochelle Fox to create one of her intricate hand-painted silk scarves.

I begin by sketching out my ideas with a mechanical pencil (mostly commuting on the train between yoga and the studio).

I completely redraw the sketch onto Bristol Board. I use tiny .005 micron pens to trace over the drawing (if you live in Brooklyn and your art store is sold out of .005 microns, I probably bought the last one.) I tend to leave a trail of them wherever I go...





I scan in the pen and ink drawing and print the design onto vellum. The transparency becomes a color separation (stencil) for screen printing. I screen print the image onto the blank white silk scarves with a black, water-based resist called gutta.


After the gutta dries, I stretch the scarf onto plastic stretcher bars using tiny pins. I hand paint the background with special silk dyes. I have to work very quickly and carefully to avoid getting watermarks or bleeding through the lines.


I paint the design using the silk dyes in a similar technique to watercolor painting, using the white of the scarf for highlighted areas. The painting process can take up to 7 hours for intricate designs.

Once the scarves are dry they need to be steam set. I roll them up in newsprint and aluminum foil and then steam them in a pot for 4 hours.

Voila! We have a silk scarf. Ready to wear or hang as a beautiful piece of artwork. If you order them from my Etsy shop they will be packaged in screen printed wrapping paper. Perfect for the holidays!

Mandala Cupcakes?

What is a Mandala?

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means circle. These concentric diagrams have both spiritual and ritual significance in Buddhism and Hinduism. They are used as a way to focus attention and as an aid to meditation and are also believed to help you access deeper levels of the unconscious.

Besides all that, they look pretty cool on cupcakes. Just sayin.

At Home Spa Treatment...

In the cold winter months, when the heat is cranking all day long, you might find your skin getting dry and scaly. Here's a quick fix you can make right in your own kitchen.


OM Scrub
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Olive Oil
1 Cup Raw Oats

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. In the shower, before turning on the water, apply mixture to dry skin with your hands.  Pay close attention to rough areas like the bottoms of your feet, elbows and knees. Enjoy the process and take your time. Rinse and towel dry. You're not going to believe how great your skin feels!

Interview with Beth Shaw, Founder of Yoga Fit

Beth Shaw is a yoga mogul. When I think of large-scale success in the booming business of yoga, Beth Shaw is one of the first names that comes to mind.

How much of a booming business is yoga? According to the Yoga Business Academy, more than $6 billion dollars were spent on yoga products in 2010 and 1 in 10 people now practice yoga.

How much of a yoga mogul is Beth Shaw? As the owner of the largest yoga school in the world, Yoga Fit, and the training of over 70,000 fitness experts under her belt, you might agree that she's at the top of the yoga totem-pole.



Yoga Fit was founded by Ms. Shaw in 1994 and it encompasses all things yoga: teacher training, conferences, books, apparel, DVD's, etc... If it has to do with the world of yoga, you'll find the Yoga Fit logo on it somewhere.

I was lucky enough to recently interview Beth Shaw. Here's what she had to say:


How did you find your way into your first yoga class?
In the early 90's I went to Renee Taylor's yoga class in Torrance, C.A. Ms. Taylor was in her nineties at that time. She had been one of the early pioneers of yoga and had a few books and tapes on yoga. I was a runner at the time and just wanted to experience yoga.

Did you have an immediate vision of what you wanted Yogafit to be, or was it a slow evolution?
It was a slow evolution that continues to unfold.



In the New Year, I believe that goal-setting is as important in our personal lives as it is in our business lives. How do you turn your goals and visions for Yogafit into a reality? Can you tell me a little bit about about your own goal setting methods?
Goals are a funny thing. We need to put them out to the universe in a few ways - writing, verbalizing and holding the intention. Goals become reality and visions become reality when we are aware of them and keep them close to our hearts and in our line of vision. We can also create a vision board and journal. 



Running a yoga-empire, must be exhausting. I'm sure that your yoga practice plays a large part in keeping you grounded. How else does Beth Shaw stay energized, relaxed and focused?
I work out or do yoga daily. I meditate and practice mindfulness. I try and carve out a fair amount of time in solitude. I have a lot of my plate so staying balanced is key to long term success. I have to move every day.


What is the next step for you and for Yogafit? Is your vision complete, or is there more?
There will always be a next step. My next step is to create a retreat center for people to go to and immerse in yoga and wellness. Also to add an instructor network program for instructors to get updated teaching materials and support.I have also started a non profit called Jewel of the Lotus Foundation, to create positive changes like spaying & neutering dogs and cats.

Finding My Way OM is starting a "Girls Club". This will be a wall-of-fame on the blog for inspirational, real, strong women who are a great example of what a girl can do when she follows her heart. We would definitely love to add you to the wall. Is there any message you would like to give to all the girls who are inspired by what you do?
Thank you. My message is a simple one: If you believe in yourself and stay focused and postive anyone can achieve their desires. The biggest obstacle to success is often our own self doubt. When I first started I did not believe I could do it.  Now, I believe that anything is possible. When we believe in ourselves we can reach the sky. Also, it is important to empower other women along the way. I barely graduated college and now I am a multimillionaire. Anything is possible. This I know to be true.

Do you use Epsom Salts?


Epsom salts were something that my Great-Grandmother had sitting on the ledge of her bathtub. 

I never considered using them myself until recently. 

If you soak for just 12 minutes, 3 times a week- you can enjoy some of these amazing health benefits (according to the Epsom Salt Industry Council):

Living Deliberately and Looking Up...


I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately,

You've probably read this quote a handful of times- it's a pretty popular one. But how does it relate to you and your life? Have you gone into the woods to live deliberately?

For me, the woods in this poem represent solitude. Going to the "woods" in my life, means going to my time of quiet reflection: yoga and meditation. I do these two things for a multitude of reasons, one of which is this... I want to have a clear direction for my life. I want to enjoy it and learn from it and appreciate the small details that make life wonderful.


I told a good friend the other day that I am a "plow horse". Glamorous- right? What I meant by this is that when times get tough, I don't crumble. I put my head down and pull myself forward with all my might. I'm pretty tough and pretty resilient- it's true- but don't don't be too impressed. I'm doing it wrong. 

Moving forward in times of adversity is great - you don't want to get stuck in a place of pain. But what I often forget is something simple... to look up. I tend to keep my eyes on the ground, moving forward, internalizing, and running on auto-pilot. When I do this I'm alienating myself from the joy that exists even in a painful place:  the colors, the faces, the friends and family standing in front of me with open arms.  I'm missing the connections, the sun rising in the horizon and the shining star glimmering off in the distance. I don't want to miss these things anymore.


Sometimes we need to look up and look ahead, even if the path before us is scary. We can't fully live being a plow horse or like an ostrich with our head stuck in the sand. We need to listen to what the universe is trying to teach us, if we truly want to live. Sometimes the path before us is the treacherous one. If we feel it's the right one, we must take it anyway.


I hope you go into your "woods" today, whether it's long drive, a quiet walk, a long meditation session or maybe a hot bath. Make plans for your future while you're there. Look ahead and see if you're on the path to future you desire. If you are, I commend you. You are sucking the marrow out of life.  If you're not, I wish you the strength you need to make any necessary changes. And if you find yourself pulling what feels to be the weight of the world- keep pulling- you'll get there. 
Just remember to look up.
